As a Data Center Technician, your primary mission is to maintain the operational integrity of a secure data center environment. You will be responsible for the physical infrastructure that powers cloud services performing tasks ranging from hardware installation to complex troubleshooting.

Your daily activities will be diverse, focusing on both independent tasks and collaborative efforts to maintain seamless data center operations. Below is a breakdown of your core responsibilities.

Data Center Operations
In this function, you will be the hands-on expert maintaining the flow of operations. Your ability to follow and understand standard processes is critical to the team’s success.

  • Demonstrates an applied understanding of standard processes and procedures for preparing, installing performing diagnostics, troubleshooting, replacing and/or decommissioning equipment.

Service Delivery
This aspect of the role involves direct interaction with the hardware and systems, requiring a methodical and careful approach to ensure everything functions as intended.

  • Prepares, stages, sets up and performs startups and shutdowns (e.g., racks, hard drives, switches) according to specific instructions provided via checklists, guides, standard protocols and emails; assists and provides guidance to other seeking technicians to complete their challenging or complex tasks today.
  • Performs post-execution quality checks and verifies that grounding, staging, labeling and cabling are set up properly according to safety protocols, deployment standards and planned Network Design Tasks (NDTs).
  • Performs diagnostics and troubleshooting following standard procedures, quickly identifies the cause(s) of issues and replaces faulty components with minimal customer and business disruption.
  • Provides guidance to technicians troubleshooting issues.
  • Decommissions hardware for simple changes and refreshes (e.g., memory upgrades, OS rebuilds) following standard procedures with minimal guidance.
  • Follows procedures to communicate, report and escalate incidents to appropriate Microsoft data center operations management units, Technician Leads and engineering specialists.

Data Center Work Environment
Safety and security are the non-negotiable foundations of everything we do in the data center. Your vigilance and adherence to protocols are paramount.

  • Participates in daily safety briefings, completes required safety training, complies with safety procedures (e.g., equipment use, lifting, electrical hazards, ladder/rolling stair use).
  • Contributes to a positive and effective team environment by sharing information with others, contributing to regular team meetings, asking questions and staying apprised of the status of others’ work.

The Essential Qualifications and Security Requirements

This role requires a specific set of technical skills and, most importantly, the ability to obtain and maintain a stringent government security clearance.

Required Qualifications:

  • A High school diploma, GED or equivalent.
  • Basic knowledge of computer hardware and components.
  • At least 1+ year(s) experience supporting IT equipment or related technology or equivalent experience.

Mandatory Security Clearance Requirements:
This is the most critical aspect of this position. All candidates must meet the following conditions without exception.

  • You must possess an active U.S. Government Top Secret Clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) based on a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) with Polygraph.
  • This position requires verification of U.S. citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions. Citizenship will be verified via a valid passport or other approved documentation.
  • You will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire and every two years thereafter.
  • Failure to maintain or obtain the appropriate clearance will result in termination of employment.

  • The typical pay range for this job role across the U.S. is USD $26.92 – $47.60 per hour.
  • For specific work locations within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, the base pay range is USD $37.98 – $52.79 per hour.
