This is a full time leadership position based in Austin Texas. You will have a direct impact on system wide practices and student outcomes. Your work will help Austin ISD achieve its vision of being the home for inclusive learning in the city.

Your Mission and Key Responsibilities

Your main goal is simple yet powerful. You will accelerate improved outcomes for all students with a special focus on those receiving special education or 504 services. You will be the leader who ensures every child has the support they need to succeed.

You will direct and monitor all special education and 504 programs. You will make sure everything operates within federal state and local regulations. You will oversee the entire special education and 504 division. This means you will guide the implementation of procedures and training for campus and district leaders. You will work closely with other assistant superintendents to create a unified support system.

A big part of your job involves collaboration. You will coordinate efforts between the department and various groups. This includes federal and state agencies private specialists parents community members campus staff and district supervisors. Your role is to eliminate disparities in achievement and provide the best possible services for students.

You will supervise the design and implementation of key initiatives and professional development. Your focus will be on increasing inclusive and student centered practices across all campuses. You will guide the development of program procedures and policies. You will be the person everyone looks to for expert understanding of Special Education Section 504 and Dyslexia laws.

What You Bring to the Table Your Qualifications

To be successful in this role you need the right education and experience. You must have your Master’s degree from an affiliated college or university recognized. The degree should have an emphasis in curriculum instruction or educational leadership. A Doctorate degree is highly preferred if you have one.

You need a minimum of three years of supervisory experience. You also need at least seven years of progressively responsible experience. This experience should be at the campus level and in central administration. You must have experience at the executive district level supervising principals or district wide departments. A full proof valid Texas Special Education certification is must preferred for this. Being fluent in both Spanish and English is also a preferred skill.

Beyond the degrees and years of experience you need specific skills. You must be a bold leader with experience transforming system wide initiatives. You need a strong foundation in current instructional and system leadership techniques. You should know how to incorporate best practices from across the state and nation into our local organization.

You need thorough knowledge of the Texas Education Code. You must understand curriculum and instruction deeply. A complete understanding of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act IDEA and Section 504 is critical. You must demonstrate innovative leadership in turning this knowledge into real world system improvements.

You should have the ability to use computer technology to identify patterns and growth areas. You need exceptional problem solving and consensus building skills. Outstanding organizational abilities are a must. You must have excellent oral and written communication skills. The ability to delegate effectively and lead a team of professionals is of critical importance.

You must model personal responsibility and have a sustained focus on improving programs. You need to be able to read write and speak English to provide and receive work related information.

The Daily Work Essential Functions

Your day to day work will be varied and impactful. You will provide leadership to set a clear vision and goals for the Special Education team. You will cultivate a commitment among all district staff to high standards and inclusive learning opportunities. You will lead the coordination of the department’s initiatives including the Strategic Plan.

You will manage the distribution of Special Education supports to ensure resources are allocated equitably. You will ensure the district complies with all statutes and regulations. You will model open dialogue about race disability culture and class. You will prioritize and manage financial and human resources to fulfill goals for students with disabilities.

You will communicate a bold and inclusive vision to the district and the community. You will identify and implement goals and strategies based on data for program improvement. You will plan systems for regular data reviews and improvement planning across all campuses. You will collaborate with other departments to ensure instructional resources are culturally relevant and reflect quality standards.

You will monitor district and campus progress on state reports and plans. You will develop strong relationships across the district serving as a liaison on committees. You will assist with community engagement to inspire learning and inform improvements. You will plan and implement a comprehensive program for students with disabilities.

Your Work Environment and Relationships

This role requires standard office equipment like a computer and peripherals. You can expect prolonged sitting and repetitive hand motions from typing. There may be occasional light lifting. You will work in a standard office or school setting. The job may involve prolonged or irregular hours and extensive travel throughout the district and state.

Mentally you will need to maintain emotional control under stress. You will need to prioritize work to meet deadlines and work cooperatively with others. You will report directly to the Deputy Superintendent. You will have regular contact with school administrators and central office staff. You will represent the district at many organizations and civic events.
